Top Stories Tamfitronics What kind of work permits are there?

Canadian work permits can broadly be broken down into two categories:

OWPs allow holders to work anywhere in Canada, for most employers in most industries.

Employer specific work permits, in contrast, only allow holders to work for a specific employer, and often specify the location and duration or work as well. These work permits are often called Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)-based work permits, as they often require an LMIA in support of the work permit application. LMIAs are the Canadian government’s method of assessing what the impact of hiring a foreign worker will be on the Canadian labour market. To successfully support a work permit application, an LMIA must return either a positive or neutral result.

Top Stories Tamfitronics How long will it take to process a work permit application?

Processing times for work permits can differ greatly depending on the program, type of work permit applied for, whether a candidate is inside or outside of Canada, and a host of other factors.

To deal with these multiple influences, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has developed a regularly updated processing times tool, which also accounts for the department’s current capacity and backlog of applications.

Top Stories Tamfitronics Can visitors in Canada apply for a work permit?

Under usual circumstances, visitors in Canada (those on a visitor visa, and not holding a Canadian study or work permit) cannot apply for work permits while inside Canada.

However, due to a temporary policy change made during the COVID-19 pandemic (set to expire on February 28th, 2025), some visitors in Canada can now apply for employer-specific work permits.

To be eligible applicants must:

  • Be physically present in Canada at the time of applying;
  • Stay in Canada while IRCC processes the application. If an applicant leaves while their application is being processed, they will not be eligible under this public policy;
  • Apply for your employer-specific work permit between August 24, 2020, and February 28, 2025;
  • Be a visitor with valid status at the time they apply for the work permit; and
  • Restore their visitor status (if it has expired) before they apply for a work permit.

Note: certain professions are ineligible under this public policy.

Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ) holders are also eligible for this public policy. This is a document issued by the Quebec immigration authority that declares the holder has been selected to settle in Quebec.

Top Stories Tamfitronics Can applicants appeal a decision on their work permit application?

Canadas Immigration and Refugee Protection Actthe federal parliamentary Act that dictates the countrys immigration goals and guidelinesdoes not outline a right of appeal for decisions on temporary resident (work / study permit or visitor visa) applications.

IRCC instead encourages applicants to reapply, stating that, if possible, a different immigration officer will review the new application.

If an applicant believes that the processing of their application did not follow procedural standards, they may instead pursue a judicial review. This is a legal procedure wherein the Federal Court of Canada will review the actions taken by the processing officer. Under the judicial review process, a lawyer in Canada would represent the applicant.

Top Stories Tamfitronics How can a lost, stolen, or destroyed work permit be replaced?

Work permit holders who have lost or otherwise no longer have possession of their physical work permit must apply to replace the document.

In addition to filling out an application, holders will also need to pay a fee to have their work permit re-printed.

Top Stories Tamfitronics Can I apply for a work permit when I arrive in Canada?

IRCC encourages all newcomers to apply for their work permit before they arrive in Canada, if they need one.

However, some individuals may be eligible for to apply for their work permits at a Canadian port of entry (POE). To be eligible to apply at a POE, candidates must:

Newcomers cannot apply for a work permit at a POE if they:

Newcomers applying at a Canadian POE may also require a medical exam in support of their application.

Spotify Says Its Un-Bundled ‘Basic’ Plan Isn’t Getting Buried — But You Be the Judge

Top Stories Tamfitronics Spotify is now taking serious issue with Digital Music News’ assertion that ‘Basic’ is getting buried from would-be subscribers.

Spotify has every incentive to bury its newly launched, unbundled ‘Basic’ subscription tier. But does that mean Spotify is intentionally hiding ‘Basic’ from would-be subscribers to steer them into its more lucrative bundled options?

Given the economics, it’s hard to imagine Spotify not wanting to bury its Basic tier. Not only are bundled plans more expensive, but they’re also substantially cheaper when it comes to royalty payments (and for proof of that, look no further than the hard data outlined in this DMN Pro report).

That may explain why Spotify has shifted more than 98% of its plans into bundles, according to our just-released Bundling Barometer.

Over the past few weeks, Digital Music News found overwhelming evidence that Basic is being buried. In response, Spotify has begged to differ and demanded corrections. We’re unsure if Spotify is helping or hurting their case here, but let’s air this out.

Perhaps the biggest tell is that new subscribers cannot subscribe to a Basic, unbundled plan. Despite the quibbling over details, Spotify didn’t dispute this critical fact.

“Basic plans are only available to existing subscribers,” a Spotify representative confirmed to Digital Music News.

Not only are newer subscribers forced into bundled tiers, but they are also unlikely to downgrade into a Basic, un-bundled tier after initially subscribing. The main reason? Few will know a simpler and cheaper plan exists — unless they accidentally stumble upon this option.

These ‘stumble upon’ moments would include revisiting the subscriber options page while logged in, clicking through other subscription options in the ‘Account’ page, or hearing about the cheaper option from a friend, forum, or other source. In all likelihood, only a tiny percentage of new subscribers will encounter the Basic option after subscribing to a bundled tier, and of those, only a subset will take action.

Spotify did note that both Family and Duo bundled Premium plans can be downgraded into Basic options, something we said didn’t exist.

The company also stated that it email-blasted all of its subscribers about the expanded option, though we somehow didn’t receive that email (and it didn’t land in our spam folder).

(On this last point, we did receive a note titled ‘Information about your plan’ on June 21st, which low-key informed us of a $1 price hike. This actually had some information about the Basic downgrade.)

None of that adds up to ‘shouting from the rooftops,’ though Spotify is trying to make the case that Basic isn’t being buried. But why are they doing this?

And why launch Basic at all if the real money is in bundling?

There may be a few motivations at work here. Spotify has been lambasted by music publishers over its sneaky, royalty-cutting shift into bundling. They have also been sued (by the Mechanical Licensing Collective) and referred to federal regulators (specifically the FTC) over this shift.

The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) is also stirring trouble for Spotify: NMPA chief David Israelite is already pushing for changes on Capitol Hill following Spotify’s shift while dangling the threat of litigation against the platform for separate infringement claims (specifically related to Spotify’s lyrics, music videos, and podcasting diversifications).

But what if Spotify can simply point to a bundle-free Basic option? After all, if subscribers have a choice between bundled and unbundled, then Spotify is merely serving the marketplace instead of abusively steering people towards royalty-lowering bundles.

Meanwhile, there are rumblings that the NMPA is preparing to litigate against the aforementioned infringement allegations. But that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms.

Stay tuned.

Maharashtra government to give pension for Warkaris

MUMBAI: In a bid to woo the

Healing community

ahead of the

assembly polls

the state government has announced that it will give pensions to senior citizens who walk in traditional month-long waris (an annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Vithal in Solapur) to

Pandharpur

.
In the budget, the state government announced that Mukhya Mantri Varkari Sampradaya Mahamandal will be established to provide facilities to Kirtankars, Warkaris, Bhajani Mandals as well as to manage the Palkhi routes.

The

pension

move is being seen as significant ahead of the state assembly polls likely to be held in October especially as the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) looks to woo the community with NCP (SP) supremo Sharad Pawar and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi likely to participate in the wari.
In a recent Government Resolution (GR) the state government has allocated Rs 50 crore as start-up capital to the new Warkari corporation that will be headquartered in Pandharpur. However the exact details of the pension amount are not mentioned in the GR and the new corporation will finalise the details on eligibility and amount.
The government has decided to provide a fund of Rs 20,000 rupees per Dindi (group of devotees) from this year. Rs 36.71 crores has been made available for “Nirmal Vari”, a drive for providing portable toilets on the pilgrimage routes.

Lakhs of Warkaris undertake a 21-day foot journey to Pandharpur. “The Warkari community has a significant following in rural areas. It is reported that senior Congress functionaries have asked Rahul Gandhi to walk with the warkaris. Even Sharad Pawar may join the pilgrimage. So the MahaYuti doesn’t want to be seen as leaving the community out. The Warkari movement has its roots in the Bhakti tradition. It can be traced back to the 17th-century saint Sant Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu. Every year lakhs of Warkaris walk to the Vithoba temple in Pandharpur from Alandi and Dehu before Ashadi Ekadashi. The wari attracts people from all communities and castes,” said a political observer.
“Devotees from all over Maharashtra flock together to bow before Shri Vitthala, the deity of Maharashtra. Palkhi of Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj is departing from Dehu today. Palkhi of Dnyaneshwar Mauli will leave from Alandi on Saturday. This government is aware that the umbilical cord of Maharashtra is connected with this Vaari of Varkari Bhaktimarga, which has a tradition of about thousand years, therefore we are sending a proposal to UNESCO for the World Heritage nomination of Pandharpur wari, which is recognized worldwide as the identity of Maharashtra. The government has decided to provide a fund of 20,000 rupees per Dindi from this year, in gratitude to the lakhs of Varkaris who carry the flag of our tradition on their shoulders,” DCM Ajit Pawar had said in his budget speech.
