Dark Light
‘He needed’: Trent Alexander-Arnold sent Anthony Gordon message after Liverpool ace star’s for England

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Anthony Gordon could have been Liverpool teammates this summer.

But Gordon stayed put at Newcastle United despite the outside transfer news linking him back to Merseyside, with the duo in action for England on Saturday.

England beat Ireland in their UEFA Nations League encounter, with the duo putting in strong performances after being handed a rare start.

At Euro 2024, Gordon only played five minutes under Gareth Southgate and Alexander-Arnold was used in England’s midfield, which in the end, crashed and burned pretty much straight away.

But with Gareth Southgate leaving and Lee Carsley now in interim charge of England, he started Liverpool’s creative brain in his usual right-back role for the first time in four years and Gordon was selected out of the left.

Declan Rice opened the scoring for England against Ireland, with the Liverpool and Newcastle duo involved in the build-up to the goal.

It was Alexander-Arnold’s pin-point ball over the top that found the on-rushing Gordon, whose one-v-one chance was saved, before the ball was recycled and buried home by Arsenal’s club-record transfer.

Gordon does that every week at St James’ Park and now he is playing in a system and with players who can operate on his wavelength, and vice versa.

Gabby Agbonlahor touched upon that on Twitter and how ‘Trent needed Gordon at the Euros’, but one was sat on the bench and the other being used in midfield.

‘Trent needed players like Gordon at the Euros,’ said Agbonlahor. ‘Runs in behind! Gareth Southgate didn’t have a clue. Well done Carsley!!’

Anthony Gordon at Liverpool

Luis Diaz’s future is up in the air at Liverpool, even though he has started the season strongly and there is no smoke without fire regarding Gordon.

Newcastle had a summer transfer window to forget and you wonder what lies in store for the club in the coming months.

Being an ex-Everton player and then possibly signing for Liverpool would be some story on Gordon’s part.

But for now, he is earning his deserved minutes with England after an unbeaten start for Eddie Howe’s side to the new Premier League season.
