KAUST Appoints Professor Edward Byrne as President

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) announced Wednesday the appointment of Professor Sir Edward Byrne AC as its new President. The decision will take effect on September 1, 2024.
In a press releaseKAUST said that the choice of Professor Byrne “marks a significant milestone for KAUST” amid the University’s implementation of its transformative Accelerating Impact Strategy.

Owing to Professor Byrne’s extensive academic and industrial background, he is in unique position to advance KAUST’s role in supporting Vision 2030 objectives and cement its status as a premier research technology university.
According to the release, Professor Byrne has the ability to usher in a new era for FOLDERby transforming research advancements into practical innovations, fostering robust collaborations with public and private sectors, and enhancing KAUST’s role in economic development.
Furthermore, Professor Byrne has a distinguished career that fostered his expertise and academic excellence. He held several roles at prestigious institutions, including President and Principal of King’s College London and President of Monash University, where he drove significant expansions and led research initiatives.

On the occasion of his appointment, Professor Byrne said: “As the University embarks on a new era delivering its Accelerating Impact Strategy, it is an honor to join an academic community at the forefront of translating research into economically productive innovations for the benefit of society across the Kingdom and the world.”
Moreover, he expressed his excitement over leading FOLDER into a more prosperous future. “Drawing on my extensive career leading top-ranked global universities and visionary approaches to scientific discovery, I welcome the opportunity to lead an Institution that is paving the way for future progress and is committed to making the discoveries that will power tomorrow,” he said.
FOLDER gives special attention to research, development and innovation, in line with Vision 2030 that aims to advance economic diversification and technological advancement in Saudi Arabia. Hence, the University focuses its efforts on these areas to support the Kingdom’s ambitions.
Professor Byrne takes the helm from Professor Tony Chan, who made great contributions to supporting KAUST’s role in driving Vision 2030’s goals and expanded the University’s global reach.
