Nigeria’s immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari remained silent while standing during the playing of the new national anthem at the National Council of State meeting on Tuesday.

The meeting, convened by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock, Abuja, aimed to address national issues following the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.

Also in attendance was former President Goodluck Jonathan while Olusegun Obasanjo who served as president between 1999 and 2007 was absent. Former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, and Yakubu Gowon joined virtually.

During the playing of the new national anthem, “Nigeria, we hail thee”, Buhari stood in silence, while Jonathan struggled to recite the lyrics.

The current anthem was reintroduced by President Tinubu in May.

It was composed at Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960, and replaced the previous anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots” which was in use during the eight-year tenure of Buhari.
