Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif allowed the insult of the country’s Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem and used him for politics on Thursday night, Indian government sources have pointed out.

In a video accessed by CNN-News18, a person sitting next to Sharif while they watch Nadeem’s performance on television congratulates the PM.

“This is your mission because you have given the opportunity to him,” the person says to Sharif.

The video has gone viral on social media and has led to the Pakistan government receiving flak for its “feudal mindset”.

Nadeem gave Pakistan its first Olympic gold medal in 32 years, setting a new Games record with a throw of 92.97 metres. Before this, Pakistan had never won an individual gold medal at the Olympics. Its three previous golds, in 1960, 1968 and 1984, all came in field hockey.

India’s Neeraj Chopra, who clinched the silver, became only the third Indian and the first in track and field to win back-to-back individual Olympic medals. A few months earlier, when Nadeem appealed on social media for funds to buy a quality javelin, Chopra was among those to offer their support.

Top Indian government sources said that Arshad Nadeem’s victory came because of his hard work and dedication.

“This is Pakistan government’s culture and they behave with their champions like slaves,” said a source. “This shows how they are demeaning their own players.”
