Politics tamfitronics

Philip Shaibu, born on December 1, 1969, in Kaduna, Nigeria, has carved a notable path in Nigerian politics. He served as the deputy governor of Edo State from 2016 until his now invalidated impeachment in 2024.

Shaibu’s journey into politics began after a career in the Nigerian Prisons Service, where he voluntarily retired to pursue political ambitions.

Educationally, Shaibu obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Jos in 2000, where he also led the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) as President. His academic pursuit continued with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Benin in 2015.

Shaibu’s political career started in 2003 with the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), leading to his election as a member of the Edo State House of Assembly in 2007 under the Action Congress (AC). During his tenure, he assumed the role of Majority Leader following notable legislative engagements.

In 2015, Shaibu transitioned to the national stage, winning the Etsako Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat. His political ascendancy continued when he became the running mate to Governor Godwin Obaseki in the 2016 Edo State gubernatorial election, a position they secured and were subsequently sworn into office on November 12, 2016.

Shaibu’s career has been marked by significant political maneuvers, including his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2020 and subsequent political disputes that saw legal and administrative challenges. Despite these, his dedication to public service and governance remains steadfast.

Recently, on July 17, 2024, a Federal High Court in Abuja declared his impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly as illegal, affirming his continued role as Deputy Governor.

However, on July 19, 2024 the Edo State House of Assembly challenged the decision of the court at the Court of Appeal, thereby frustating moves by Shaibu to resume office.

On Saturday 20 July, 2024, Shaibu dumped the PDP and returned to his former party, the APC.

Married to Mrs. Maryann Philip-Shaibu with children, Shaibu continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the political landscape of Edo State, embodying a blend of academic excellence, grassroots support, and unwavering dedication to public service.
