Google has a corporate agreement to buy energy (starting with 7 small nuclear reactors) from Kairos Power. Kairos Power FHR (KP-FHR) is a novel advanced reactor technology that leverages TRISO fuel in pebble form combined with a low-pressure fluoride salt coolant. The technology uses an efficient and flexible steam cycle to convert heat from fission into electricity and to complement renewable energy sources. It is high temperature pebble bed power. China already has a 210 MW pebble bed reactor providing commercial power.
Kairos Power and Google have signed a Master Plant Development Agreement, creating a path to deploy a U.S. fleet of advanced nuclear power projects totaling 500 MW by 2035.
Kairos Power will develop, construct, and operate a series of advanced reactor plants and sell energy, ancillary services, and environmental attributes to Google under Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Plants will be sited in relevant service territories to supply clean electricity to Google data centers, with the first deployment by 2030 to support Googles 24/7 carbon-free energy and net zero goals.
The innovative, multi-plant agreement will support technology development by extending Kairos Powers iterative demonstration strategy through its first commercial deployments. Building on progress from the early iterations, each new plant will enable continued learning and optimization to support accelerated commercialization.
