The collapse of the Alau Dam in Borno State caused chaos that rippled throughout the entire country. A report from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) states that about one million people were affected by the dam, and 414,000 were displaced.

The agency has since opened up nine IDP camps for those displaced and in need of help while the death toll has risen to 30.

The overflow of Alau Dam led to a catastrophe that the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council have named the worst flooding in 30 years.

The federal government has allocated ₦3 billion for the victims’ rehabilitation, food, and other vital resources required for their survival. The governor has also allocated ₦10,000 to every household affected by the flood.

Oil marketers and refiners have all demanded that the federal government remove total subsidies for oil and petrol in the country.

The Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria, along with the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, the Crude Oil Refiners Association of Nigeria, the African Refiners and Distributors Association, and the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, have all come together to share their demands with the federal government.

According to the message sent to the FG, the associations discussed the consequences of the recent price hike in petroleum products. They expressed their desire for total market deregulation by the FG.

“The call for complete deregulation and market liberalisation was reiterated. The benefits include improved efficiency, enhanced product availability, and increased private sector participation,” the message read.

The monkeypox virus still lingers in the country, as reports have claimed that the disease has now spread across 23 states in Nigeria.

According to the NCDCP, Nigeria has now recorded 67 confirmed cases of the monkeypox virus from the 1,031 suspected cases in 23 states.

Monkeypox is a transmittable disease which can be contracted by humans from animals and spread between humans.

The states affected by the virus in Nigeria so far are Oyo, Cross River, Nasarawa, Bayelsa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Gombe, Edo, Plateau, Delta, Niger, Osun, Benue, Ebonyi, Anambra, Ogun, FCT, Lagos, Rivers, Abia, Enugu.
