Josh Shapiro Delivers Brutal Dig on J.D. Vance: Trump Has ‘Buyer’s Remorse’

Josh Shapiro gave a scathing review of JD Vance’s standing in Republican politics on Friday, calling the VP-hopeful a “total phony baloney” who “doesn’t know what he believes.”

The snarky response came during a press conference after a reporter told Shapiro that Vance had attacked him by claiming his speeches sounded like an “impression of a really bad Barack Obama.”

“Barack Obama is probably our most gifted orator of my time, so it’s kind of a weird insult, I guess,” Shapiro began.

The Pennsylvania Governor, who’s reportedly on Kamala Harris’ vice president shortlist, got more pointed in his comments from there.

“I’ll say this about J.D. Vance,” Shapiro added. “It is real hard being honest with the American people when you’re not being honest with yourself. J.D. Vance is a total phony baloney. He is the most inorganic candidate I think I have ever seen on the national stage. He doesn’t know what he believes, and that is why it’s impossible for him to articulate a coherent message to the American people—because he doesn’t believe it.”

Vance has been criticized for flip-flopping on his policy stances and on his support of Donald Trumpwhom he compared to Adolf Hitler in 2016.

Shapiro’s attack on Vance didn’t stop there, however. He continued, “This guy is not exactly off to a good start and it’s clear that Donald Trump really has buyer’s remorse with his pick.”

Before moving on, Shapiro challenged Vance to keep coming after him, saying, “If he wants to sling insults in my direction, which I’m not even sure is an insult, let him do it… Bring it on. I’ll be ready for whatever the hell J.D. Vance throws my direction.”

J.D. Vance was announced as Donald Trump’s VP pick less than a week before Joe Biden bowed out of the 2024 race.

That last line felt like a clear message to Harris that, should she call on Shapiro to join the presidential ticket, he’s more than ready to do battle with Vance in a VP debate and beyond.

Shapiro is considered one of Harris’ leading candidates for the gig, along with Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.

Harris is expected to officially announce her pick early next week, but, if history repeats itself, her choice will likely leak some time before the official announcement.

Trump savors convention crowd in lengthy acceptance speech

MILWAUKEE — Donald Trump on Thursday night formally accepted the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in a speech heavy with references to the shooting he survived last week and elongated by ad-libbed applause lines and riffs — capping a long-anticipated moment that came only after a winding and dramatic campaign.

Trump, now the first major-party presidential nominee who has been convicted of felonies, took the stage days after a 20-year-old gunman nearly assassinated him during a rally in Pennsylvania, firing a bullet that clipped his right ear and left it bloodied. He wore a white square bandage over his wounded ear throughout the convention, with some attendees wearing their own in solidarity during the weeklong event.

While Trump is known for his off-the-cuff public remarks and social media posts, he has given highly planned convention speeches in the past. Thursday’s speech started that way, but he soon detoured to give lengthy thanks to the speakers and attendees and then to engage the crowd with asides, impressions and sometimes hard-to-follow deviations.

His speech as written could have come from any number of Republicans, but the way Trump delivered it was similar to his usual pattern at his rallies — an unchanged style after he and allies spoke all week about how the shooting had changed him.

The assassination attempt just days ahead of the convention left organizers and Trump aides figuring out how to host a long-planned party in the wake of near-tragedy. In the hurried 48 hours before the convention began, Trump aides not only rewrote his speech but also sent a message to other convention speakers to soften some of their remarks.

Trump mentioned President Joe Biden only once, something he did more than 40 times during his 2020 speech accepting the Republican nomination.

Trump spoke for 93 minutes, exceeding the record he set in 2016 for the longest nomination acceptance speech at a convention.

The average retail price paid by consumers for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) during the month of April 2024 was N701.24, according to the latest data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) .

This represents an increase of 0.64% compared to the N696.79 recorded a month earlier in March 2024 and 176.02% when compared to the N254.06 recorded in April 2023, the latter before fuel subsidy removal.

At N797.78 (not N767.78), Kogi State had the highest average retail price for petrol on the State profile analysis, followed by Nasarawa and Zamfara States with N778.89 and N754.29, respectively.

Nigerian States that had the lowest average retail prices for Premium Motor Spirit (Petrol) were Lagos, Niger and Ogun, with N602.55, N633.75 and N647.14 respectively.

According to Oluwatobi Ajayi, the 120 battery-powered tricycles, popularly known as Keke Marwa and Keke NAPEP, were assembled by Nord Automobiles in Kano State.
