Residents of 10 different communities in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi have fled their homes following heavy rains that led to flooding in these areas.

According to Aliyu Shehu-Kafindagi, the Head of Operations for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) office in Sokoto, the flooding in the communities left over 2,000 homeless and several properties worth millions destroyed.

Shehu-Kafindagi said while the residents have fled to places of safety, the flooding which occurred due to the overflowing of water from River Niger largely displaced fishermen in the locality.

Several farmers also lost their hectares of farmland and assorted crops to the disaster.

He said the communities affected include Kunda, Dala-Maidawa, Dala-Tudu, Dala-Mairuwa, Ishe-Mairuwa, Kwarkusa, Kurmudi, Tugar Maigani, Tukur Cika, Uguwar Gwada, Ugugar Wakili and Gundu.

He also noted that the agency through its assessment identified an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Tudun Faila Primary School.
