Edo election: SUPPORTERS of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, on Monday, besieged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Benin to protest an alleged plot by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to tamper with result sheets and other materials used during the September 21 governorship election.
Led by the deputy governor-elect, Honourable Dennis Idahosa, the protesters blocked the entrance into the INEC office, causing gridlock around the area as they cautioned INEC against allowing anybody to tamper with the materials.
The PDP candidate in the election, Dr Asue Ighodalo and his party had obtained a court-enrolled order directing the commission, among others, to hand over the comprehensive list of all the materials available in its custody for the inspection of Ighodalo and the PDP and “the taking of the Certified True Copy thereof.”

Lawyers including the APC and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) counsels who represented the seven political parties on the ground for the material inspection met with officials of INEC.
The counsels made appearances for their various parties as INEC finally granted access to the parties to inspect election materials for the just concluded Edo Governorship election. The team of both PDP, APC lawyers, and forensic experts who spoke on condition of anonymity were at the INEC Office to inspect the BVAS machine, voters register, ballot papers, and other election materials used by the electoral body for the September 21 gubernatorial election. The inspection of election materials is one of the prerequisites for challenging any electoral result in Nigeria.
The PDP and its lawyers were, however, prevented by INEC from inspecting the materials since Monday despite presenting a court order. INEC bowed to pressure on Tuesday evening, announcing today, Wednesday, October 9, 2024, as the date for all parties to come for the inspection exercise. The PDP who visited the INEC Office on Wednesday to carry out their duties met an already charged atmosphere with thugs besieging the area just as security personnel provided tight security at the INEC office.
