On September 16, New Delhi became the epicentre of empowerment as News18’s SheShakti 2024 electrified the city with its theme ‘Breaking Barriers’. The event wasn’t just a gathering; it was a powerful statement showcasing the remarkable achievements and unwavering spirit of women who are shattering ceilings across various domains.

The day’s momentum began with an inspiring message from the Hon’ble President of India, Droupadi Murmu, who emphasised that the safety and dignity of women are pivotal to national progress. Her presence set a powerful tone, underscoring the event’s vital role in advancing women’s rights. Building on this foundation, the Hon’ble Vice-President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar, took the stage to honour the women trailblazers present, advocating for a future where women’s voices are integral to our legislative processes. Continuing the empowering narrative, the Chief Justice of India, Dr Justice DY Chandrachud, delivered a stirring keynote address. He championed the need for a societal shift towards recognising and supporting women’s rights, reinforcing the call to action initiated by the previous speakers.

As the day unfolded, the theme ‘Breaking Barriers’ resonated powerfully through every session. Nigar Shaji, Project Director of ISRO’s Aditya L1 Solar Mission, began the discussion by advocating for a holistic integration of career and family roles, challenging the notion of mere balance. Taking the conversation ahead, Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay, Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, emphasised the importance of women reshaping and challenging existing systems from within.

Transitioning from these insightful perspectives, the focus shifted to international diplomacy with distinguished figures Lakshmi M Puri, Former UN Assistant Secretary General & Ambassador of India, and Ruchira Kamboj, Former Indian Ambassador to UN. Their discussions on navigating high-stake roles with grace and professionalism highlighted the global stage’s evolving landscape. This theme of transformative leadership continued as young politicians and Members of Lok Sabha Bansuri Swaraj and Shambhavi Chaudhury passionately explored the significant impact of increased female representation in governance.

The entrepreneurial spirit then took centerstage with Shaheen Mistri, CEO, Teach for India, Rinzing Choden Bhutia, Founder of Agapi, and Sankari Sudhar, Founder of Overqualified Housewives, each demonstrating that ambitious aspirations are achievable. This inspiring narrative was further illustrated by women from the defence sector, including Sqn Ldr Shivangi Singh, First Woman Rafale Fighter Pilot, Captain Shilpi Singh from Indian Navy and Major Seeta Ashok Shelke, known as the ‘Wonder Woman of Wayanad’. Each one of them shared their inspiring journeys of overcoming immense challenges with bravery and resilience. Together, their stories highlighted the boundless potential of women breaking through traditional constraints and achieving excellence in their fields showcasing that barriers are not obstacles but opportunities to be conquered.
