Former FUTA alumni president makes donation for renovation of Students Union Building

The immediate past president of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Alumni Association Worldwide, Dr Olaitan Adesomoju, has donated one million naira for the renovation of the Students Union Building of the university.

While making the donation on Friday November 8, , Olaitan, who was the vice president of the Students Union in the 1999/2000 academic session, said the gesture was another way to give back to his alma mater.

“I stand before you with humility and gratitude to God for this opportunity to give back to my first constituency, the very place where my leadership journey began.

“This community has given me so much, and I’m honoured to showcase another aspect of my comradeship with this donation,” he said.

Adesomoju, while encouraging other alumni of the institution to continue to contribute to its growth and development, highlighted some of his contributions to FUTA from his days as Student Union leader till his tenure as alumni president to thisi nclude: redesign of student ID cards, establishment of the Alumni Events Centre, a revenue-generating hub to the association till date, renovation of Block C Akindeko Hall, initiation of the Alumni Trust Fund, drilling of borehole in FUTA Teaching and Research Farm and renovation of the Engr. Tunde Babalola basketball and volleyball court with a sum of 3.2 million naira.

Adesomoju, currently a member of the governing council of FUTA, promised not to relent in his contribution to make FUTA a major force in the comity of global universities.

In her response, the vice chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, appreciated Dr Adesomoju for his benevolence and for always identifying with the needs of the university.

She described him as a valuable partner-in-progress and called on other alumni to emulate his laudable gesture.

She also admonished the student leaders to judiciously use the funds.

Meanwhile, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor David Oke, said Dr Adesomoju had consistently shown that he is a leader both in action and words.

He described him as an alumnus with genuine concern for the interest and welfare of the students, and promised to supervise the efficient deployment of the donation.

In the same vein, the Student Union president, Mr Adegoroye Abejoye, also commended the donor for extending a generous hand towards the renovation of the Student Union Building, describing it as a promise fulfilled.
